607 SQN BATTLE OF BRITAIN SERVICE

19 SEPTEMBER, DURHAM

A commemorative evensong service to mark the 81st Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, was held in Durham Cathedral, on 19 Sep 2021 at 15:30 Hrs.

Civil dignitaries visited the Cathedral nave with the Museum of the Moon sculpture suspended from the tower.

The event was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Durham, Mrs Sue Snowdon, the High Sheriff Mr Robert Harle and the Chair of Durham County Council Mr Watts Stelling. Additionally, members of 607 Sqn, the 607 Sqn Association and numerous RAFAC units were in attendance. The service, led by the Cathedral’s Vice Dean, the Reverend Cannon Michael Hampel, included the laying of wreaths at the main service memorial by the Lord Lieutenant, Cllr Stelling and OC 607 Sqn Wg Cdr Mike Shuttleworth. Wreaths were also laid at the 607 Sqn Memorial by Sqn XO, Sqn Ldr Paul Ratnage and Mr Fred Carter from the Sqn Association.

The service was followed by a parade by the Durham & Northumberland Wing RAFAC, on Palace Green.
